country girl but not county fair girl....

If my chickadees were giving me an award today it would be the worst mother for 4 days award.... I know it's usually an award for a whole year.... but I like 4 days much better....

cause I accept....

Why? you may ask....

cause it's the County Fair!

and I am not a County Fair girl!!!!!

Let me explain a few things about myself...

I cried reading Charlotte's Web, weeped openly in the movie. I love Wilbur!!! and just thinking about Charlotte death has me chocking up...

I have grown to love living in a rural area... one of my dear friends who knew me before I moved here comments on how this place has been so good for me.....

with my husband's job I'm flying solo a good part of the time.... it's the only life I know ... I married a military guy and I knew that was part of the package... and this place makes me feel comfortable.... it's small so I don't feel alone, my chickadees are happy and it's a great spot to vintage....

and I'm hoping for a cottage on our propriety for guest to visit... my theory on that one is if I say it enough times it'll happen.... I'll let you know when it does....

{notice I said when I'm sending positive thoughts towards my dream cottage}

As I drove my daughters to school, I was having a debate with my oldest and very wise daughter {she takes after her dad}

We were debating,

"Can I be a transplant city girl who is now self proclaimed Country Girl but not a County Fair Girl"?

I say YES! my daughter thinks other wise!

She doesn't understand how I can love junking but not love the County Fair....

I kindly told her that's different kind of junk! I never said I was an all junk loving girl!

If the County fair was just looking at the cute farm animals.... and the cute ribbons for whose pig is the cutest I like it.... please, oh please don't ask me what I think about the purchasing of the animals and what happens to them after that... cause I don't get it. I prefer not to see a sweet face that has eyes like Wilbur staring at me.... knowing what's going to happen.... nope don't want to see it or think about it. And I'm not judging those who do. It's just not my kind of latte!

but sadly it's not just about the 4H farm animals.

It had rides {they scare me to death} When were they last inspected? How were they assembled? and when was the last time someone wiped them with Lysol wipes! i can't help it.... haven't you seen the 60 minutes stories about fairs and of terrible accidents and what have you? I did and it scared me for life!

and the real junk I am referring to is the food.... just smelling cotton candy gives me a queeze stomach... watching a kid eat it has me gagging in my too cute purse that I would rather not have to dry clean!

To make my life more difficult I have to drive by the County Fair in order to go anywhere!

So I can't pretend I didn't know it was going on... or that I forgot about it...

no such luck!

and guess what?

My daughters get the day off school tomorrow just for the County Fair!

Seriously! A day off school just because the Fair is in town! Seriously!

A double wampy is that my darling husband is on travel!

So I have to suffer the look of disappointment on my children's face all alone!

I pull up to school after this debate... park the car... and walk them into school... looking so sad.

My oldest daughter's friend sees her and rushes over asking her if we were going to the Fair tonight?

She responded, "my Mom does not do the Fair"! I laughed cause the way she said it was so hoity toty!!! but I can't help it I'm not!!! it's true... and isn't honesty the best policy?

Thankfully my daughter's friends family does the fair and she is going with them tonight!

Now, I just have to suffer 3 disappointed faces tonight.....

With my award in hand I'm off to make brownies... and find the DVD of Charlotte's Web!

I like the fair. My husband doesn't. I usually like the craft area. Seeing all the creativity is inspiring. I stay away from the caged animal section.

The food doesn't bother me. I try and buy the fried stuff. I figured they fried the germs off.

I don't do rides anymore. I'm just basically the one who holds everyones stuff so they can do them. And Yes, taking hand sanitizer would be the thing to do.

I grew up in a town in FL that is called Showtown USA. It's where a lot of the carnival people live when they are not travelling. I've seen some pretty interesting characters over the years. One day I'll have to post about it.

I'm Faux-Country. I get it :)
I even spent years participating in the farm animal raising and selling...Sorta traumatic...I don't know what I gained from it--just a lot of need for therapy and the inability to eat lamb....
ADORABLE pig picture!!!

This was such a great post!

I don't like the fair, either!!!

Ours is coming up next month and my kids are off, too.

I hate the look on their little faces when I make up some excuse why we can't go, but then I feel so bad for doing that, that I end up taking them(with a giant bottle of germ-x in hand)!

Hope you get that cottage one day!

Adrienne

WOW A day out of school for a fair? That must be some fair! We have more carnivals than fairs in my neck of the woods (California) HA! But I still feel the same as you do- Not only when was the last time the rides were inspected or cleaned- But where in the world did they hire the help from?? Although I'm probably not the one to help you confront your Fair fears. Remember I'm the one battling the over active imagination! ;)

I totally understand. I am married to a military guy also..An A-10 pilot who leaves us alone quite often. My kids love the fair- it was last week and I also won the bad mom award. I hate the fair. I don't like the nasty - you know the health dept doesn't inspect food. I don't like the rides that are duct taped together and I don't like the animals that spread e-coli. It is sad but we also miss the fair each year. The older kids go with friends but until the two little ones get older they will miss it unless dad is home to take them.
Hold your head high- they aren't missing anything that is good for them.

I agree with you about the rides...who is assembling them and who is checking the assembly????...and the food: yikes!!!...the rest, I like :)

...and what about taking cash and preparing food all without hand washing and/or gloves?!
Yummy! I'll take two, please.

I saw the animated version of Charlotte's Web when I was in 5th grade and to this day I still don't like that story!

I'm a fair girl for sure. I don't even THINK about anything other than how cute those prize animals are. As far as I'm concerned, they are going home to be someone's pet.. and that's what I keep telling myself.. uh huh.. yeah...

Rue said...

hehehe.... LuLu, in many ways we're alike (from what I've read) and in some ways we're totally opposite. I love the fair! The rides not so much LOL I know where the animals go, but I don't think about it while I'm there. I guess it comes from my mom that owned a cattle ranch when I was a teen and used to pretend they were going on vacation... don't ask!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the movie and brownies ;)

I am with you there! I don't do fair rides, something about them putting them up in 2 days and then taking them down to go to the next town. And, it is always dirty, I come home with grime all over me. And, I don't mind gardening. It is just icky! Oh, and Charlotte's Web was one of my favorites (cover was falling off of it!) I even named my piggy bank Wilbur. Charlotte is the only spider I have ever liked. Your kids will grow up just fine (probably with all their limbs) without going to the fair. Take them to Disney!

SMiles!

I grew up going to the fair every year. It was a big deal. When we set our wedding date we weren't paying attention to those kinds of things and set it the week of the fair. I was harassed by my male cousins for some time.
Somewhere along the way I lost my enthusiasm for the fair. We took the kids when they were younger, but it wasn't the same. Charlotte's Web sounds like a great substitute!

Oh you poor thing...You just enjoy Charlotte's web honey...

Lulu, i am right there with ya sister...i am not a county fair girl either..and honestly i didn't know about the animals til you just said that and now I have a yucky stomach. Find some friends for them to go with, have a nice night by yourself...make sure they bathe when they get home!:)

Laura said...

I have to agree, although I have to think that there would be some good photo ops at the County fair...that said, your brownies and dvd idea sound way more appealing to this city girl.

I am with you on the whole fair thing. I don't remember the last time we went. My kids don't even ask me - I don't think they have even been to the fair. That is kindof sad...

I can't believe yours get the day off for it! I guess I am just a city girl...

XOOX
Jen

PS - I don't like to camp either, are you a camping girl?

LuLu said...

Jen, you just reminded me write a post about camping and wild life and why it's not part of my vocabulary! LOL the short answer is no, i don't camp and hubby knew this fact about me before we got married! so he knows never to ask me :)

Oh Lu! I love the fair! I know it's sick, but a fried Snickers really floats my boat.:)
PS I love guest houses too. My magnificent obsession.

I am not much of a "fair" person either but I would do it for a couple of hours but not the rides! I love the bunnies!

Ok. I love the fair-
I don't "do" the rides, or let my kids do them, but I love the food-
expensive, yes, but sooo good...
We love looking at the animals...but I have been unaware of what happens to the animals after-Are you saying they are not someone's pets? It sounds like something bad, if I get what you are saying-We all love the animals, and now I am wondering what I am missing here...Will I not be loving the fair with your answer???

Jen said...

I hear ya LuLu on the fair thing, I love little farm animals. And the rides...yes there is something wrong when they whip them up in a few days...scary!

koralee said...

Adorable post..I love the fair but I like to make it a quick round about and then home...I don't like spending all day to the point of grumpy children who are overtired and full of junk food. Make it a quick morning and I am happy for the whole year until next years fair.

Angie said...

I feel ya, especially about the whole animal thing!

I don't do rodeos - that is my unbugeable stand and will be when my daughter gets older. Fairs, well, I too cried my eyes out when Charlotte died. I like your brownie ploy - brilliant!

The Whispering Creek House said...

O yes! I am a country girl at heart! I love it! not the fair! I send my five little darlings with their dad and stay home with my feet kicked up and a glass of lemonade and listen to the silence and LOVE it! LOL

The "out of school for the county fair day" rule is crazy. With four kids and a husband out of town, I am not about to take them to the fair. Good thing it rained today...I have a small excuse. We did tell them that when they are five, they could ride one ride and that is the ferris wheel. What was I thinking. I do love seeing the gigantic pumpkins and gourds, my favorite thing cause they are so extreme.

Maybe I will read them Charlottes Web today while their out of school. Enjoy your day.
