"Bowl" Full Of Memories...

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

I had no idea I would have such an emotional reaction when I saw this set of vintage Pyrex bowls! There they were sitting on an old dresser. It took a moment for it to register. My first reaction was how cute it's a set of three. But then it hit me. Right in the chest. And out of my mouth for all to hear was, "Oh my Mom has a set of these!!!" Like anyone within ear shot would care that my Mom has a set of vintage Pyrex bowls. I collected all three and clutched them to my heart. I was flooded with memories of my Mom....

I was in the kitchen of my childhood home. Barefoot standing on the cool tile floor. Watching my Mom cook. She is the best cook! She can make the simplest recipe taste out of this world. As she cooked I would chat endlessly just to be in the kitchen with her. She never asked for help with the preparations of dinner.

She is a messy cook though. The kind that needs to take everything out and not clean up till after her meal is complete. And after our stomach was full and we were totally happy it was time to clean up. She would wash and I would dry.

I remember picking up the flour sack dish cloths she always used and I would dry those Pyrex bowls. There was not a dinner that took place in our home that those Pyrex bowls were not used.

It's really the silliest thing. But I immediately bought the bowls and rushed home. I washed them really well and made a salad! Just so I could use them for dinner that night. I was so excited to tell my kids and my husband about the bowls and why I bought them. I called everyone to dinner. Placed the bowl down filled with mixed greens and veggies along with Shrimp Scampi and french bread.

Would you like to know the reaction I got after I told them about the bowls and how excited I was? All eyes were looking at me. With a stretch of silence followed by an oooookayyyyy!!! The long stretched out kind of okay! My husband had to step in and remind the kids, "This is why we love her! Right kids! Cause mom likes to get excited over a set of bowls!" giggles and more giggles erupted around the table!

Well since I didn't get the reaction that I wanted I called my older sister! I knew she would remember our childhood... and those bowls. She did!!!! And we chatted over drying them and what we remembered being in them.... I felt so much better!

And yesterday when I finally spoke to my Mom on the phone, I blurted out my special find of vintage Pyrex bowls! And that they made me think of her! She laughed and told me that she still has the set I remember and uses them just about everyday, but the large size broke a couple years ago. So she is down to two!

As I drove the girls to school today it had me thinking.... I wonder when my children are all grown and have left the nest.... what will trigger this kind of reaction for them. I just pray really hard and try my hardest to parent them the way they need me to. I'm off to make something just so I can use my bowls.... and praying that I am making some memories for my children along the way.

Isn't it amazing that something that's so insignificant in the eyes of others can spark such vivid memories and emotions? My mom has been gone now for 8 years and certain smells often evoke memories of her, like the perfume she used to wear or roses she grew in her garden. I, too, have often wondered what my girls will recall about me when they're off on their own. Hopefully, they'll remember me as a mom who loved life and them with all her heart!

Be sure to pop over today...I'm having a giveaway!

My Mom had the same set only pink! My sister gave me the largest bowl and I use it all the time. I'm sure your kids will remember those bowls fondly in the years to come!

LuLu, you are so sweet.
I guess it IS true--men will always have a hard time understanding our emotions.
I understand your excitement for the bowls. I truly do.
I love that you LOVE them so much and what smiles and memories they have brought to you!

What a great experience!

I think this is a lovely post! I so understand just what you are talking about, and what a lovely memory of your childhood!

My mother-in-law still has a set of those same Pyrex bowls but in turquoise. As soon as I saw your picture, I thought of her. Funny how those things work.

And I love the response of your cute hubby!

love it!! sounds like dinner at my house! You know what else i do? I choose certain scents i love like grapefruit and light it in my diffuser all the time so that when they're older and they peel a grapefruit they will think of their mama!

Oh...I love this story..how sweet is that. I have this glass vintage dishes where the little tea cup fits on it...my grandma use to make little egg salad sandwiches with pickles and cut the crust off for me. When I found them in a store in VA...all those memories came to me...it's precious.

This photo so reminded me of my own childhood and our same set of bowls. I love finding stuff like this. Some think I'm sentimental, but I just love the way it makes me feel to hold a little memory.

So funny, I found a set about 2 weeks ago in 3 shades of orange...I had the same reaction...take them home, wash them up and use them for salad...
I already have my moms in blue/green, but I had to have the orange ones they are the accent color of my kitchen...and I have put them on display on the refrigerator for now...
Thanks for the great story...
Regards, CAM

I am totally with you!! I bought a turquoise bowl at an antique shop because it reminds me of the larger yellow bowl{must be a part of a set} my Mom has that was her Mom's.
Love your blog, just found it!!

Good morning LuLu :)

I loved this post. My mom has bowls like those without the design and it brings back the same memories.

It's funny that when you're young you don't think twice about stuff like that and when you grow up the simple stuff can bring tears to your eyes. I get it and your kids will one day too, whether they laugh now or not ;)

Sweet, sweet post! We had these in GREEN! When I saw them, it made me gasp for air! :-) All the cookies, brownies, and cakes made from them. My mom also used to made homemade scallop potatoes. I remember because *I* was the lucky one that had to do the dishes and try to get the crispy sides clean!!!
