tis the season...
I awoke with the excitement of the Christmas season.
For some it's early.
For some it's late, but now is my time for:
 garland and glitter
ribbon and ornaments
wrapping and tags
wreaths and holly
joy and noel
Santa and snowmen
Let the decorating begin!

Moment of Reflection

3

Thursday, November 27, 2008

I'm whispering.

I snuck away for a moment of reflection before the day starts.

We wake early in our home. Still, I stole a moment even earlier.

I hear little voices (don't worry it's just the kids talking) and sounds of little feet on the the wood floors.

I smell the pie's that darling husband helped me bake last night.....

Yesterday, I needed to "deep clean" my home (turn it inside out to shake all the crumbs and dust out, kinda cleaning!)

As I was cleaning I thought of all the blessings for which I am thankful.

I am thankful for the spilt goldfish (the snack, not the swimming kind) container that needed picking up.

I am thankful for the Lincoln Logs that were scattered around the play room.
I am thankful for "all" the everyday stuff that needs to be done "everyday" to keep my favorite place - home organized.
(Good thing I'm writing this down, I tend to forget that I'm thankful for this one!!)

I am thankful for all my favorites things in life that bring a smile to may face and makes me to do the "happy dance".

I am so thankful for the love and support from our family and friends.

We will be thinking of them all as we sit down to dinner and say our blessing today. Wishing them all a wonderful and very blessed Thanksgiving day.

It is my life's journey and I am thankful for all of it!

Happy Thanksgiving!

staring at a cabinet of desserts!!! they all look good.....oh, how to choose....

My vintage jewelry (dessert) this Thanksgiving.

It's Monday and I'm hitting the ground running.
Or at least trying too!
Thanksgiving is just days' away and the baking bug has finally hit.
Pie recipes have been selected. The grocery list is made.
(Just need my 3 year old son to be on board to tackle the grocery store.)

Visions of pies/jewels are floating in my head. All good things ahead!

The Morning After

Sunday, November 23, 2008

It's not often I eat a donut. But when my chickadees woke me with words of a donut run. It took no convincing for me to kick my darling husband out of bed with words of, "great idea, Dad will be happy to go"!  It was a tad selfish on my part...that meant I didn't need to make breakfast (one morning of pure sugar is not going to hurt these kids) and I needed the sugar jolt to accompany my coffee after the long labor intensive day yesterday turned out to be.

It's still early to tell how successful the fundraiser turned out.  But after tones of work I know the 20 vendors (including myself - I was the Southern Living at Home vendor) had a great time. Not sure I recommend coordinating the fundraiser, decorating the gym in Holiday cheer starting at 9 AM and worrying about everything it entails and having a booth is such a good idea! I'll tell you a secret....I had a few discontinued items at my table that I didn't know were discontinued!! Oops.... okay I can't do it all.  At least I was able to laugh and tell them I was a bit busy.

As the sugar continues to run through my system I must tackle the exciting job of unloading two cars worth of everything I took to school to make it all happen.  And thank my hubby for still loving me after thousands of calls for help and oops I forgot something at home can you hurry and I mean hurry to the school to bring it to me!!  I think I have a long day ahead of me...I see a grandee Cinnamon Dolce Latte in my future!  Hope your cup of joe tastes as good as mine does today!

New Home For My Tree

5

Friday, November 21, 2008

Home Sweet Home for my "every holiday tree". Seeing it in it's special place already brings a smile to my face. Love it when it seems so effortless placing a treasure. I feel a bit behind in Christmas decorating at the moment. What am I talking about? I am even behind in my Thanksgiving prep for my basket of goodies I like to take to my brother and his family.

I volunteered to be the coordinator for a fundraiser at my girl's school. It's called Shop Til You Drop a Ladies Night Out! My children school is a cute tiny school, and needs major fundraiser for financial support. When my fellow mom friends heard the words Shopping fundraiser they kinda turned to me and said "you're the one to make this happen!" HM, do you think they think I vintage shop too much? hee hee So, I said yes! Ugh!!

I found 20 wonderful home party consultants who are willing to participate. They have agreed to give a portion (some even all) of their profits from the sales to our school! Love them!!! This turned out to be the easy part. I needed to find volunteers to help set up for this function and work the admission tables, wine and beer tables, raffle ticket tables, and restock the complimentary buffet and Christmas cookie table. Did I mention we have no budget for this. Plus, tear the whole thing down at 10Pm for Church activities the next morning. Is it Sunday yet? I'm now in the frozen state. All the what "ifs" are running through my head.

So, in all this craziness, seeing my little tree brings me comfort! Happy Friday to all!

So much to be thankful for...

This is how I felt yesterday when I first saw my "new blog design"!!
Gigantic heart felt "thank you" to my new friend, Shawn - Eclectic Whimsy Designs for capturing the spirit and style I wanted for my blog.
She worked her magic (which is truly magical to me because Html codes scare me)

I look forward to my daily visit to my blog spot with my cup of coffee!
Cheers to my many future posts and my daily dose of my favorite blogs I can't miss!

My Finds

vintage sled -
the sound of giggles and vision of hours spent outside in the snow brings tears to my eyes!
"Louie" needed to come home with me!

my "every holiday tree"

When I was treasure hunting I wasn't consciously aware that I had a theme to "my finds"! This time around I couldn't resist the Bird Cage. I had thought about it ever sense I spotted it last month. SHH it's a secret! It's a Christmas present for my 2 little girls who share a room. It's going to hold their Littlest Pets!

Next I spotted the sled! Oh yippee! I have wanted one for my front porch for such a long time. I love the charm of a vintage sled leaning against the house by the front door with Christmas lights lit up on a cold winter evening. (of course once my crew saw me walk in with it they immediately wanted to get on it). At one time it must have belonged to a boy named "Louie." Well, once I saw that his name started with an "L", I had to bring it home for Lulu & Co's front porch!!

What can I say about the old suitcase! I did get a, "What are you going to do with that?" question from hubby and a friendly shopper. I love the way suitcases are used in rooms for decorating. For the holiday season it reminds me of family members getting on planes, trains and automobiles to visit their loved ones. So I haven't decided just where I will put it amongst my holiday decor. But I know I will find a loved spot for it. After the holiday's I plan to place it on an old bench I have in my guest room.

I was about to call it a morning when I spied the tree. It's already a favorite! Didn't take long for me to bond with it.(I know my poor husband)! I have officially named it my "Every Holiday Tree"! I instantly knew the where it would go. The children and I have already been through all the holidays and special occasions. (birthday tree, Valentines tree, Easter tree, Fourth of July tree, Halloween, Giving Thanks tree) It's charming adorned or not! Just the way I like it.

Vintage Weekend

wish I brought home the snow shoes (but, I had to prove to my husband I have some self- control)

"vintage laundry hamper" absolutely loved....it was sold...I'm still weeping

love this old radio...so charming and the color is great

the possibilities are endless....

It was my favorite time again. The Vintage was open on a rainy Saturday morning. It never disappoints. It was worth the drive back from the city to be home and ready to go bright and early. Well this case it was a bit gloomy weather wise, but not in spirit.

So many great treasures were to be had this day. I was a tad slow on my game. Tickets were taken on a few gems that I had my eye on. I didn't spot them fast enough. Darn! It's okay though because I need a reason to go back each month. Plus, I need to visit with my fellow vintage enthusiasts that I meet on these early morning outings.

I happened to overhear a man who accompanied his wife, tell a fellow that he had no idea why they were "hunting for finds" when their house was already sinking with items. I had a good chuckle as I continued my search.

I even took my husband back on Sunday morning (Sundays are usually much calmer at the store) just to roam and share my favorite place. I love to pretend what I would buy and where I would place it. Here are a few favorites that made me stop and take a picture. I did not come home empty handed...I'll share "my finds" tomorrow.

It Was Nice To Visit

Leaving the country setting for an evening in the city

Trust me, you can take the girl out of the country for an evening!

We had a wonderful time at the Ball. Being in Washington DC is always thrilling. And you don't have to ask me twice to get dressed up!

The memorable part of the evening for me was sitting at a table for 8 and 6 of us had been at the same duty stations at the same time--twice, but have not seen each other for 6 years (small world?). What's amazing and (super special to me) is reconnecting just like it was yesterday. Their is a special bond that makes this connection possible between families that have similar experiences.

As my kids have come to say, "it's nice to visit; it's nice roam; but it's also nice to come back home..." Although I've never been to "Big Bear City" with the Bernstien Bears, the concept is about the same!

One Night Only

Trading in my wellies tonight for an evening out. Headed to the Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Washington DC. We don't go out often, but when we do it really seems like a production. Which is probably why we don't go out much. The sitter is booked (me dear friend)!! Cookies are in the oven. Pizza money is on the counter for my children and her children (poor thing will be surrounded by 6 kids tonight. I'm surprising them with the DVD "Kung Fu Panda".
I'm leaving her with a fresh stack of my favorite magazines! Is it just me or do you clean your house, for a sitter, like they've never been in it before?
I always think they may open a drawer and think,"what a mess"!

But the wellies will be back on tomorrow, bright and early because it's the VINTAGE SOURCE Christmas Open House and Artist Show! If only my blog could dance!!!
The alarm is preset and the camera is ready. Happy Friday to all.

Gift Ideas

" Scrabble Tile Pendants" super sweet from- italwaysfits.com

I am a HUGE fan of anything embroidered

simple tote with seashells added-such a easy crafty idea

I received my first holiday invitation for the season. It's always a struggle to think of a new "Hostess gift". Usually it's an hour before the party and I am running around the house looking for a bottle of wine (which is always enjoyable but not unique) or a candle to give.

In my attempt to be better prepared this year I came across 3 gift ideas for either Hostess or teachers. Teacher gifts are by far the hardest to buy!!! They have enough "apple themed gifts" but the struggle is what to get them. Gift cards, I know are always appreciated, but sometimes it's really fun to find something different or handmade. I really want try my hand at making more of my gifts this season.

I love themes. My theme for this Christmas is "Simply Thoughtful". I think the love and work you put into the thought of the gift is personally rewarding. Getting the kids involved will be meaningful to them as well.

Being the "professional shopper" in my home I want to support the wonderful Mom's who have Etsy shops. There are so many very talented women out there! I had to explain what Etsy was to my wonderful husband because I have quiet a few "favorite" items on my list!
Happy shopping!!!

Old Cabinet Charm

I am organizing (good word for cleaning up after the children) the place I call the "pool room". I have grand ideas for this room. I have visions of knocking down a wall. Drywalling the remaining walls and finishing it off with vintage finds and remnants from flea markets. Ah! it's so nice to dream! This room use to be our storage room. But we had a swimming pool built which resulted in my storage room needing a major makeover because it leads off to the pool-it's also the place where we store TOYS and the children do their crafts. It has an extra fridge for the summer months. Which is then stock with an endless supply of Popsicle's and CapriSuns (you may find some beer in there too!) for family and friends who come to visit/stay awhile and swim. Hence the name,"the pool room".

One of my "favorite" finds at the vintage store was this cabinet. I did not have to do a thing do it but bring it home and load it up with my outdoor serving pieces. I feel in love it's old charm. When I first spotted the cabinet it reminded me of my Southern California days. It has such a warm and cottage feel about it, that I can't help but think of the summer months. I guess I need to stop day dreaming and get "organized".

Images courtesy of Country home
This year I am all about new ideas for the holidays. I have been looking for fresh ideas for Thanksgiving. I want to focus on personal touches as the year draws to an end. When I saw the idea for the napkin ring I was totally in my glory. I ran to my daughters room and "swiped" the dress up jewelry I gave them (all my old pieces I don't wear anymore) ! They wanted to revolt, but I assured them, that being my daughters, I have plenty more "dress up items" to give them. I was very persuasive. I have their box of treasures all ready to make "napkin rings"! My husband reminded me that we really don't use cloth napkins all that much! The nerve! I gave him the look and said, "don't squash my crafty idea"!

Oops, in all my excitement I forgot to tell you how to make them. All it takes is ribbon and a piece of jewelry (broach, belt buckle or clip on earring) and glue it on. I love that each one will be different.
What's great about this idea is that you can use them for other holidays. They don't scream "only take me out for Thanksgiving"! That in itself, is triple points.
And how cute is the bouquet of flowers as place cards. Who wouldn't be delighted to have that hanging off their chairs. Even if the turkey comes out dry, I for one would not care because I get the flowers. For me it's the "lovely touches" that make the holidays memorable.
