I stumbled across a pair of old shutter doors and thought, "what could I do with those"? Only minor TLC was needed. Removal of the hardware, a bit of cleaning and some brainstorming I came up with an idea!

Now, I have added a decorative backdrop that my wall was lacking. By salvaging the shutter doors, I have not only saved them from a landfill, but have created interest where there was none!!

Soy Happy

Monday, September 29, 2008

It's that time of year when I burn a candle on a cozy day. I especially love the wonderful aromas--they can change or set a mood! That being said, I quit burning regular candles because of unhealthy effects. They are hard on the environment (think soot) and on my family's health.

That's why I was so excited to finally find SOY candles in my area!! They are perfect for an environmentally conscious home!! Isn't it wonderful when it's the little things in a day that make you do the happy dance!!!! So if you only do one thing for the environment today--change to soy candles! Enjoy autumn cleanly.

Fun With Retro

This summer, I was flipping through a Pottery Barn catalogue and came across 'Milk Glass' table lamps. They grabbed my attention right away! It was a honey look at these! Aren't they cool? moment we all have with our husband, significant other, or shopping buddies. This moment, was followed by a "yes dear" response! To my surprise, and his, I found a pair of yellow Glass lamp bases at the Vintage Source that give me the look that I love. GIDDY!!

I swooped them up and now they are adorned with linen shades from Pottery Barn (which I purchased through a friend who had an extra set of shades--Even Better). I love a good deal!! And I love these retro accessories!

Our newest addition, Phelps, is loving his new home in my "Southern Living at Home" hurricane vase! The kitchen is the hub of our large family, so he always has an audience!!
The fall catalog of Southern Living at Home is beautiful! It is definitely worth viewing. It has great ideas for using items for many different purposes!!! Love that!!http://www.southernlivingathome.com/
The kids (aka: Brook, Coral, Seashell and Shark Boy) have all hung up their swim gear for the season! They can dream of next year's swim time as they watch Phelps glide through the water in my repurposed vase.

Eco Friendly Household

I am a creature of habit. If it works why change. Well let me say, changing my entire cleaning supplies has been wonderful! I started looking at all the toxic items I had in my house with 4 children and thought this is crazy. My girls are at the age that they want to help and I could not let them help with the cleaning because of the toxic ingredients.

Now I can!! Love the Seventh Generation line and the Method line of all natural products. From counter cleaners to Natural Laundry Detergent (blue eucalyptus & lavender makes my laundry room smell so fresh) I even switched my dish washing detergent to a "phosphate free"product. Having a product free of "phosphate" is better for lakes and streams. These are things my family uses everyday and I feel so much better about using products that are safe for my family and the environment. I feel terrible about waiting so long to make the change! But, they say it is never to late to change. I want to continue to do my small part to make this a wonderful world for our children!

Vintage Sideboard

Don't you just love to find the perfect thing when you least expect it! I sure do! I walked into my favorite vintage store, Vintage Source (which is only open once a month) and there it was!! A vintage Thomasville sideboard for my dining room. So exciting! The size, color and price were perfect! For some crazy reason vintage shopping makes finding the perfect item more exciting!! You just know that it's unique and comes with a history that will fit into my home to make a new history. Perfect example of reusing an old piece of furniture and changing the paint color to black for an updated look and ta-da...It's new!

Color Selection

As crazy as it may sound I LOVE to paint!! This passion makes my husband "oh so happy"! It really transforms a room without having to spend a lot of money. With the right color the furniture just pops! A tip about paint is to buy a good brand. It makes painting much more enjoyable. I was asked by a friend, who just built an addition to her house, to guide her in picking 6 colors. I had a blast!! Wish it was for my home!!! We picked paints from the Williamsburg collection by Pratt and Lambet. I can't wait to see the outcome. Find your color by taking the color personality profile quiz at

One of my first finds. The caining on the back was missing, but I knew I found something great. With a little bit of fabric and some sewing a new back was added and too cute cushion was made. Now I have a one of a kind chair for my bedroom.
